Easy ways to reduce your (single use) plastic waste
Plastic (waste) is everywhere: toothbrushes, water bottles, take away food, packages.. You get the point. It is one thing that the oceans are being cleaned from plastic, but another thing we can do is to ensure that no (or less) plastic is ending up in the ocean anymore. If you look around, you’ll see a lot of unnecessary (single use) plastic. At first this might seem depressing, but it’s actually the doorway to a more sustainable environment. That it’s unnecessary means we can ditch it, and swap it for more sustainable options! So here are simple steps you can take to help reduce the plastic waste:
- Bring a reusable shopping bag with you wherever you go
I remember this being the first step i took when it comes to conscious behavior, but i must admit it wasn’t necessarily about the impact it had on the environment.. Plastic bags used to come free with your groceries/ shopping, but they started to cost money (because of the impact they had on the environment). And i refused to pay for a new bag every time.. so i started to take my own reusable shopping bag with me wherever i went.?This is a really easy thing to do yourself, and it will actually save you money!
- Buy your products locally (from the market / farmers..)?
A lot of products in the supermarket are packed in plastic. And if they aren’t packed already, for example fresh tomatoes or beans, they’ll offer you a plastic bag to carry it. And at the counter they’ll offer you another plastic bag to carry all the other plastic bags.. If you do this, you’ll leave the store with lots of plastic bags, that you most likely will throw away when you get at home.
The better option: Buy your groceries at the market. Not only this will save you money, but it will also save packages. A lot of products offered at the market aren’t packed. Make sure to bring your own bags! And if you do buy groceries in a supermarket: bring your own bag and choose for products without packages where you can; or don’t put them in separate plastic bags.
- Switch your single use water bottles for a reusable one
Another sustainable switch that is both good for the environment and yourself! Not having to buy a water bottle every time will not only save you money, but it will also save on creating waste!
- Carry a reusable coffee cup
If you are a person who likes to enjoy tea and coffee on the go as well, this one is for you! Instead of having your coffee to go in a single use cup, bring your own reusable coffee cup with you. This way you can still enjoy your drink on the go. 🙂
- Say no to plastic straws and cutlery
Sometimes it just happens that you have to have your food on the go. A way to do this and create less waste is to carry a reusable straw & cutlery with you. For example on the Package Free Shop they sell stainless steel sporks (a spoon and fork in one) and straws. This a one time investment that will save a lot of waste!
Of course there are a lot more steps to take when it comes to reducing plastic waste! But i feel like these are really easy things to make habit. I believe habits have a big impact on the environment. So if you can make sustainable choices when it comes to habits you’ll actually have a better impact on the environment. This article was part 1 of many to come about how to reduce the plastic waste! I’m still discovering new ways to reduce plastic and stepping up this game myself. And if you think about the impact one mosquito can have, just imagine what impact these changes alone will have on the environment!?
And i’m very curious.. what do you do to reduce plastic waste? Leave a reply so we can inspire each other!
